About Dr. Michael McKay


Michael Scott McKay was born in Pennsylvania in 1944, while his father was in the Navy. Dr. McKay spent most of his childhood on Groton Long Point, while his father worked as an engineer at Electric Boat. He went to high school at the Norwich Free Academy, where he was an honors student and played football. He graduated from NFA in 1962.

Dr. McKay did his undergraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, and Baylor University. He played hockey during his college undergraduate years. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from New York University in 1969. He then attended theUniversity of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine from 1969 through 1973, when he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. He served an internship at the Norwich State Hospital. He then worked briefly for a local group practice, and opened his own private practive in Uncasville, CT in 1975.

Dr. McKay has been very active in continuing education. He went on to become both a Fellow and then a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry. He continues his studies through voraciously reading professional journals, and by attending meetings and presentations of the American Academy of Periodontology, International Association for Orthodontics, the Yankee Dental Congress, a local study group, and a very diverse group of specialty seminars. He holds memberships in the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. McKay is a visiting Associate Research Professor at the
University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, where he participates in research projects and assists in teaching. He can often be found in the UCONN library on Thursdays.
